Catching up....

Well, our last week was a long one. We had a house full of sick kids & I wasn't feeling real good, either. :( Katie had RSV, so I pretty much spent the nights sitting up in a chair, holding her on my chest so she could be elevated. My poor, sweet baby. RSV is the pits. :( Katie is our third baby to get it. Kyla and Khloe had it at 3 and 4 months old, so Katie is quite a bit older than they were. It was still no fun.

Look at her sweet face here. You can tell she isn't a happy camper. :(

Katie did learn how to climb up a step. Here, we caught her standing on a bin of toys. :)

I celebrated a birthday while taking care of all of my poor, sick little ones. Kyla made me pancakes and the other girls made me cards. :) They are all so sweet. My parents made us dinner and brought it over, along with a gift. :) I was so surprised. :) They are so thoughtful. I am so blessed to have such special family and friends. :)

I finally let Katie start eating more solids. :) She has almost 6 teeth now and she just doesn't seem to want to eat the baby food in jars anymore. She won't even open her mouth for it anymore. :) So, I did try the organic teething biscuits. She LOVED them and thought she was pretty cool getting to eat like us. :)

We pretty much spent the entire week coughing all night and so the girls were so exhausted during the day. Here is a picture of Karly when she fell asleep at the table after dinner. :) Poor little thing.

Katie is getting SO CLOSE to walking. Her big sisters keep trying to get her to walk to them & I keep saying, "No! Don't encourage her to walk yet." Isn't it funny how the more kids you have, the longer you want the babies to stay babies? :)

So, we really didn't do too much in the way of school last week. :( We did do some, but we held off on MFW, so I don't have any fun photos from school last week to share. :( Hopefully, we can share some from this week soon. :)

contain unhealthy ingredients. :) . Cascade Fresh brand Yogurt has a Dreamsicle yogurt that is SO GOOD. We have put that

Screen Overload Part 2 Indoor, Screen-Free things to do

I think it is a good idea to help kids come up with ideas when they are at a loss of what to do. Having a list of ideas handy helps cut out the time you both lose just trying to decide what to do. :) I tried to come up with a list of ideas off the top if my head.
I am breaking this list up into two separate posts. This post will just be for indoor ideas and the next post will be for some outdoor ideas.

This list is for a variety of ages. I didn’t break them down into ages. I tried to break them down into categories, but many of these activities can be classified in more than just one category. :) Here are just some ideas to get the kids’ creative juices flowing. I’m sure I missed a lot of great ideas. I would love to hear any suggestions of more things to add. :) We would love to expand this list. :) Please keep in mind that I have all girls, so that is why there are not a lot of boy-friendly activities on here. :) I’m so sorry. :)

I am currently trying to put together some little bins to hold different toys/accessories for some of the ideas listed.. They are being stored in our storage area in our garage. They aren’t big bins, but small ones that hold a few things for playing make believe games. :)

When you see a * next to the activity, it means that is an activity they have to ask to do first. :)

I think it is also good to encourage kids to pray about how to spend their free time. God will guide them in good choices & ideas.

INDOOR IDEAS:

Creative Play:
Little People
doll house with little people
Lambs
Hospital (Use items in Hospital bin)

play piano/guitar/violin
Make your own musical instruments
Sing
*paint rocks
Blindfold art
**Play bakery with play dough, or Baking soda cakes. (Our girls LOVE this activity. You put baking soda into a little cup & add just enough water to make it wet, but now watery. When you turn it over, it will hold the shape of the cup. Our girls like to use the cherries from their Hi Ho Cherry O game for cake topping). :)

Screen Overload Part 1

I don’t know about you, but I do not like to hear my kids tell me that they are bored. :) I actually don’t hear that too much anymore because my children know that if they tell me that they are bored, they will most likely find themselves pushing a broom, or putting away dishes. :) I always tell them that if they use their creativity they will never be bored. I really believe that creative kids just don’t get bored. Although, I am seeing a change in what kids spend their time doing.

So many kids spend their days in front of screens..... Computer screens, hand-held game screens, TV game screens, TV screens. They are so used to being entertained & amused that they don’t get the chance to exercise their creativity muscles anymore. It is all done for them. I hate to admit it, but that is what has been going on in my home this past week. My kids have been sick all week & they haven’t felt like doing much. Sadly, they have felt like being inundated with screens. :( I am ashamed to tell you that I have just allowed it because they have been sick & to be honest, I have just been overwhelmed. I also caught what they have, so I have felt like lying around, too. After my lazy week, I decided that we need to make a decision to get screens under control in our home. I warned the girls that we will be having a screen free week starting on Monday. They were horrified. I think they are planning on reporting me to Children Protective services. No TV, computer, or screens for an entire week has to be considered abuse, right? :)

Don’t tell my kids, but I am truly looking forward to it. I am excited to get to spend more time interacting with them, rather than having to compete with screens. :) I will try to blog each night to let you know how it is going. The girls are OK with this as long as that is all I am doing on the computer. I have promised them, so I will be sure to keep my promise. They are excited about this blog being a sort of scrapbook for the year, so they want things we do to be documented. :) I am thinking of having the girls also blog
(on paper) about it from their perspectives. I will share their notes, with their permission. :) It will be a fun assignment for them. I think we will spend time talking about what kids use to do before screens existed. =O

I have come up with a list of “screen-free” activities that I will post in another post. :) This one is getting too long. :) I would love it if anyone wants to join us. Let me know. It will be fun to do it together. :)

Germs. :(

Well, I a sitting here with a house full of sick kiddos. :( Those poor things. We may end up at the Doctor's today for a couple of the little ons. Poor Khloe /7 Katie are miserable. It breaks my heart. :(

What make-up?

Karissa got a play makeup thing for Christmas. It's the kind that comes with a notepad full of faces & you are supposed to put the make-up on the faces. Well, Karly decided she would give it a try on her face. :) I told her that she was beautiful without make-up. :)

Much better! :)

Karly's Preschool Curriculum

Karly LOVES to join in with her big sisters when they do school. She usually does crafts & listens to the stories. sometimes she will sit at the table & color. She really wanted to start doing her own school time with mommy. So, I am SO EXCITED to have found this through another blog (Thanks so much, Kysha)! :) We are going to start using a preschool curriculum by Heart of Dakota. It is called Little Hands to Heaven. Here is the link to this fun curriculum: http://www.heartofdakota.com/little-hands.php
I have looked through it & look forward to starting this with Karly really soon. :)

Khloe's Kindergarten Curriculum

I just realized that I never shared what we use for Curriculum. :) I will do four separate posts on this, since we have so many different levels we are working with. :) This one is the longest, so I thought I would start with it first. :)

Last year, we started Khloe in My Father's World's Kindergarten curriculum. She LOVED it!!! During that time, we were going through a difficult pregnancy & I had so many ultrasounds, Midwife appointments & Perinatologist appointments, so we didn't get very far with it. We just worked on a lesson when we could & all the girls joined in on the fun projects. So, we mainly worked on reading & a little math together. This year, when I told her that she was going to use the 1st Grade program, she got upset & said, "Mom!!! I want to finish Kindergarten!!! Please let me finish it!!! I LOVE Kindergarten!!!" So, we decided to let her finish! :) It is such special one on one time that I was happy to agree! :) As soon as we finish it, she will start the first Grade curriculum. :) We are basically just using the Bible & science themes. Khloe has been reading for awhile now, so we aren't using the phonics section. We have really been enjoying the science themes & all the fun projects that go along with them. :) I love how everything is tied together. The Biblical concepts go so well with the science themes. :) They memorize the Bible Concepts, which Khloe enjoys. :) Here are the lesson Themes:

Here are a few pictures from past activities we did in My Father's World K:

The Sun Unit:

Painting "Moon Rocks" in the Moon Unit

A Project from the Leaf unit

Khloe with a few projects in the Apple unit. I love how she spelled the word fruit, "froot." :)

Khloe made Apple cake in the apple unit. This was a special recipe that we found that belonged to Gigi, the girls' Great-Grandma. :) It was AMAZING!!! :) This is a new family favorite now.

A few projects in the nest unit

Painting Birdhouses in the Nest Unit

Some yummy "nests" Khloe made for a treat

A craft from the Turtle Unit:

Making paper mache dinosaur eggs with friends, Cole, Hannah, Tommy & Kathryn! :)

Sadly, the Watson Family moved away before we could all paint the eggs, so I only have photos of the girls' eggs. There were baby dinosaurs inside of these. :)

This is where we left off. :) We actually just finished learning about dinosaurs & are now just starting the Octopus unit. :)
Here is a link to My Father's World's Kindergarten page:
http://www.mfwbooks.com/k.htm

Math & Reading:
Khloe just started using Singapore Math. http://www.singaporemath.com/Singapore_Math_Story_s/10.htm
She is using the Mcguffey Readers for reading. Here is a link to these: http://www.keepersofthefaith.com/Catalog/Curriculum_McGuffeyBooks_217.asp
We love these wonderful readers & Khloe thinks it is pretty neat that she is reading the same books that Laura Ingalls-Wilder read when she was a little girl. :)

Sorry this was so long. :)

A few More pictures....

I hope your not tired of pictures. :) I just had to share these of Kaylee, Karly & Katie. :)

Our Week

Well, we had one of those weeks where we were overwhelmed. Monday's laundry day overflowed into part of Tuesday. We have been trying to de-clutter, so we have been weeding through things to take to Goodwill. We ended up pretty much just working on math, reading & writing this week. The girls made some Valentines & we played some games. We are missing our World map. We are currently having it laminated so we can write on it with dry erase pens. :) Hopefully, it will be more durable that way, too. Our other map ripped & was so worn out, we had to throw it away. :( So, sadly, we weren't able to work on My Father's World this past week. We are looking forward to starting back up with it this coming week. :)

Kaylee stayed on track with High School this week. I will have her post soon about what she is working on. :) She is going to volunteer at a Horse show today. :)

I almost forgot...Katie has 6 teeth now!!! She is working on getting #7!!! I can't believe she has cut 6 teeth in the past 4 weeks!!!
She also tried bananas, apples & Apricots. I will post a photo of that below. :) She is still loving pushing her dump truck all over the house. :)

Kyla & Khloe making Valentines

Do you think she likes them? :)

Fun at the park

These were taken after Kyla & Karissa's Birthday photos. My parents live near a Catholic church & school, so there is a fun playground within walking distance. :)

Can you tell they're excited to get to the playground. :)
